Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a global movement of 2.8 million supporters, members and activists in more than 150 countries and territories who campaign to end grave abuses of human rights.  The vision of AI is for every person to enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.  AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion and is funded mainly by public donations.

So far we have met about twice a month and currently have about 40 members.  Our goal is to not only actively support the ending of human rights violations, but also educate ourselves and our community about global human rights issues.

This year, we have taken part in the Packathon, Journey to a Hate-Free Millenium, Invisible Children presentation, and the Writathon.  Currently, we are participating in the Relay for Life event.  We are pleased to offer this great learning opportunity to our school and community.

Announcements
Next meeting
We are so sorry for the delay in activity, everyone!  Good news though!  Pam Schwalbach is excited to come in and see everyone one last time before our summer vacation.  We plan to meet on Tuesday of next week, right after school in Ms. Larson's room, 150.  Also, have you all seen the pictures of the shoes we bought for the people Mrs. Schwalbach and Libby went to see in Tanzania in April?!  It's incredible!  The pictures are up on Libby's Facebook, you should really go check them out.  And everyone who participated, be very proud.
Thanks guys!
Relay for Life!
Relay for Life is on May 20th, and Amnesty is hosting a team!  You can go online and sign up under our team name "MFHS Amnesty".  There are only 15 people allowed per team, so sign up quickly!  You can find it at www.relayforlife.org
 .
Please note that $10 is necessary to participate, and it would be wonderful if everyone could raise at least $50 for the cause.
Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium
This awesome and insightful event will be taking place next week and help is needed!

On Tuesday, an organization called ARCh will be doing an assembly about bullying and tolerance.  The 12th grade assembly will be at 8:00, 11th at 9:45, 10th at 12:45, and 9th at 2:05.  We need 2 volunteers from each grade to introduce the group, and everybody else to act as leaders and help engage people in the presentation.
On Wednesday, all homerooms will be doing an activity related to the presentation, and we will introduce the "mix it up at lunch" program that is taking place on Thursday.  Everyone needs to help out in their homeroom on Wednesday.
On Thursday during lunch, we will be leading an activity called "mix it up at lunch", which encourages kids to sit somewhere else during lunch and meet different groups of people.  For each lunch period, 2 volunteers are needed at a table where people can sign a pledge to live a tolerant lifestyle, and everyone else is needed to encourage people to participate in the activity.  There may be an incentive later for people who sign the pledge.
Some of these spots have already been filled by S.M.O.R.E.S./Diversity club but there are still a lot of open spots.  Anyone who can help in any way should come to the S.M.O.R.E.S. meeting right after school on Monday in room 203 (Mrs. Whaley's room).  If they cannot make it to the meeting, volunteers should sign up with Mrs. Perkins-Peterson in Student Services.  We need all the help we can get.  Volunteers might get a cool shirt from helping with the event.
Also, this event is expected to get major media coverage from different newspapers and TV stations.
